Career Development Plan
A Career Development Plan is a tool to keep the individual's skills and interests aligned with organizational needs and to build employee commitment to the organization. When it is completed by the employee and manager cooperatively, it can have a major impact on an employee's motivation, personal growth, and overall contribution to the company. Employee career development can make the difference between watching your best people move up in the organization and watching them move on to a new career or to your competitors.
Career development plans may be written with the following objectives in mind:
- Growth in the current job. Expanding skills and job satisfaction for employees who are at the top of their career path or who do not have a desire to move beyond their current position.
- Promotion and succession planning. Preparing an employee for a promotion, including the replacement of the employee's manager.
